This year’s Small Business Saturday may have come and gone, but we’re still pretty excited about the small businesses based in Snagajob’s hometown, Richmond, Va. Here’s one more profile on a small business owner who continues to make contributions to our community all year-round.

Mason Antrim is the COO of Collared Greens, a store that specializes in men’s clothing and boasts a line-up of all American made, environmentally-friendly goods. Their Richmond Va., location is the first brick and mortar shop for the brand, which debuted as an online retailer. We spoke to Mason to discuss the difficulties of growing a small business, the challenges of finding quality people and the opportunity presented by Small Business Saturday.

Working with a small business, what’s your favorite part of the holiday season?

With the holiday season, you get to watch all your hard work perform in a short period of time. Collared Greens products make great gifts, so we typically do about 30-40 percent of our annual sales during this time period. It’s a really fun and exciting time for our business.

Do you do anything special for Small Business Saturday?

We’ll be offering some really great promotions online and in store. Every time you do stuff like that, you get a little more experience and a little more understanding from the consumer’s standpoint. Our goal is to improve on our offerings each time and expand our connection with shoppers.

Have you faced any challenges transitioning into a brick and mortar store?

No major challenges yet, just major opportunities. Richmond, Va., is one of our biggest markets. The new storefront will provide new experiences and allow us to play around. There will be some added complexities but we feel strongly about our management, so it’ll be okay. The real fear would be missing out on sales.

What tools do you rely on during the recruiting process?

We’ve used local hiring, mostly word-of-mouth, since we’re still only six people strong. We haven’t used any major recruiting services but we’re excited to try Snagajob when we move to Richmond. We need people who embody our brand. I think Snagajob is beneficial because it directs the hiring traits to find the right person. We want passion rather than someone who’s looking for a paycheck.

Besides our own store, where is your favorite place to do holiday shopping?

I like [The Shops at] 5807 because there are a lot of fun gifts that you can choose from without having to spend a whole lot of money. Schwarzschild Jewelers is another local favorite when I’m shopping for my wife. There are a lot of great small businesses in Richmond, Collared Greens is proud to finally be one of them.
